The extract below has been created by Sidney (aged 7) with the help of his Dad (aged 37) which is his recollection from an amazing day as away mascot for Carlisle United at Scunthorpe United on Saturday October 4th.
We arrived at Scunthorpe and ran to meet the players off the coach as it was just arriving. I had photographs with Luke Armstrong, Regan Linney, Gabe Breeze and Georgie Kelly. They were all really nice. We told them I was going to be mascot and Luke Armstrong said, “see you out there!” to me.
A really nice lady called Claire who is the SLO gave me a goody bag which the London Branch sorted for me. It had an autograph book, pen, sweets, a pack of cards and… some yummy wine gums!!! I ate most during the game.
As we were early, we watched the players warm up on the pitch and I had some chips but no sauce so I didn’t get it on my Carlisle kit. We then went round to the main reception where two nice ladies chatted to us whilst we sat and waited to go through. One of the Carlisle staff (the kit man, my Dad thinks) came through to ask for a cup of tea for Mark Hughes. He doesn’t have sugar and isn’t fussy how it comes! The kit man was really nice and asked me about my favourite players.
15 minutes before kick off, Julie from Scunthorpe came to take me through to the side of the pitch. Wow! She was very kind and helpful. I did a high five with all of the Carlisle players as they came off. Gavin Skelton was really friendly and had a chat with me. Julie then took me down the tunnel to wait for the players to come out and left my Dad and Grandad pitch side.
Carlisle came out of the changing rooms and Julie pointed me in the direction of Regan Linney, who I wanted to walk out with. He is my favourite player. He was very nice to me, asking me if I was excited and I saw this on CUTV on pitch side blues the day after the game.
I was very nervous and shaking a lot! We walked onto the pitch where I saw my Dad and Grandad taking photos and videos of me with Regan. We lined up and did high fives with the Scunthorpe players and the referees. Julie then took me to the centre circle for a picture. I ran off and managed a quick photo with Mark Hughes who was sat on the bench.
We walked to the away end through the home stand which meant I missed seeing kick off but we were sat in our seats quickly. I loved it when everyone was clapping, I pretended it was just for me!
The game was brilliant. I had my fingers crossed when we got a corner and we scored! 1-0 to Carlisle! I loved singing the songs and had the best day. It was OUTSTANDING!
Thank you to everyone who sorted the day for me, I will never forget it! And thank you to my favourite player… Regan Linney!
“Regan Linney running down the wing, scoring goals, makes the Carlisle sing”
Up the blues!
