As it’s a Tuesday night game, we won’t be organising group travel to Tranmere. If you are planning on going please drop a line to travel@carlislelondonbranch.org and we will try and put you in contact with other branch members making the trip.

Boozers and Food Outlets Worth a Visit

There are quite a few pubs in the vicinity of Prenton Park, however none of them are particularly strong on the real ale front. It is worth noting is that due to a local by law it is illegal to drink in the streets in Birkenhead.

Lord Napier, 28 St Pauls Road, Birkenhead, Merseyside, CH42 3UZ

A street corner local, close to Rock Ferry Station. Despite a fairly drab exterior the pub was warm and friendly on our last visit in 2009 with a couple of decent real ales on offer.

The Sportsmans Arms, 9, Prenton Road East, Birkenhead, Merseyside, CH42 7LQ, 0151 6445724

Probably the best bet if you want somewhere close to the stadium en route from Rock Ferry. Very much a cheap food and SKY Sports type of place with extra cold versions available of almost every type of drink on offer. Apparently they now do a bit of Cask Ale so perhaps it’s on the up?

Fly in the Loaf, 13 Hardman Street, Liverpool, L1 9AS, 0151 7080817

Brilliant city centre pub close to Liverpool Lime Street Station, well worth a visit if you’re passing through en route to Birkenhead. Run by a very welcoming landlord from West Cumbria, The Loaf does 6 cask ales, over 50 bottles beers from around the world, decent pub food, ESPN and SKY Sports and welcomes families during the day. London Branch used this pub when we played Everton in the cup a couple of season back and many of us felt it was the best pub we visited all season.

What’s the Ground Like?

ground
Prenton Park is a pretty smart and fairly modern all seated stadium with decent facilities. The newest and tallest of the four stands is the Kop End which was formerly used for both home and away fans but is now home support only. Away fans are housed in the smaller Cow Shed end behind the opposite goal which has capacity for about 2,500 away fans and a good view with no obstructions. On one side of the pitch there is the low level Johnny King Stand and on the other side lies the older and larger Main Stand. Inside the away end there is a bar, TV screens and the usual scran available.

How To Get There

By Train

Trains run hourly from Euston to Liverpool Lime Street. Unfortunately Virgin Rail do not offer group save tickets at the weekend but advanced fares can be bought for as little as £11.50 each way. As is usually the case with advance fares, book as far in advance as possible to get the best prices. A walk on off peak saver return will set you back £70. From Lime Street take the Wirral line to Rock Ferry or Birkenhead Central and it’s a 15 – 30 minute walk. Busses are available from Liverpool Sir Thomas Street and Birkenhead Bus Station.

By Car & Where To Park

There is a decent sized official car park at the ground which costs £5 and it can be booked in advance. For details of how to book and directions to drive to Prenton Park, please click here.

When Have We Been There Before?

In recent years our record at Tranmere has been pretty wretched with 3 defeats and a no score draw in our last 4 visits. Our last win was in March 2007 when we won 2-0 with goals from Danny Graham and Kevin Gall. The previous season Carlisle drew 0-0 in the Paint Pot Cup at Tranmere before winning an epic penalty shootout 11-10. Simon Grand netted the winning spot kick as the Blues marched on towards the Millennium Stadium. To read a fans view of our trip to Tranmere back in January 2009 please click here:.
