Boozers and Food Outlets Worth a Visit

Jackson's Wharf, The Highlight, off Marina Way, Hartlepool, TS24 0XN, Tel 01429-862963

A few minutes’ walk from the away end in the Marina development, Jacksons Wharf is a traditional family pub with excellent value scran and decent real ale from the Marston’s stable of breweries.

The Rat Race Ale House, Hartlepool Rail Station, Station Approach, Hartlepool, TS24 7ED

A brilliant quirky pub located within Hartlepool station, if coming by train this is well worth a visit. Since opening in November 2009 this pub boasts to have served over 450 different beers with 4 generally available at any one time along with a cider or perry. About the size of a front room, there is no space for a bar so the beer is served from a cupboard. If you’re looking for lager, pub scran or sky sports then this isn’t the place for you but for real ale fans it’s a cracker!

There are a few fast-food spots on Church Street and York Road, offering the usual Kebabs, chips and pizzas.

What's The Ground Like?

victoria park
Victoria Park is small and compact yet fairly smart with a mixture of seats and terracing. At the southern end of the ground is the covered Town End Terrace for home fans. Opposite is the all seated Rink End which houses the away supporters. While the view is good there are three pillars which obstruct the view a bit. Along the western side of the pitch lies the older Millhouse Stand with covered seats to the rear and a paddock terrace to the front that’s open to the elements. The Cyril Knowles Stand on the other side is a newer single tier all seated stand. Being close to the coast the wind tends to come in off the North Sea with a fair chill so it’s advised to wrap up warm, though being from Cumbria it’s unlikely to faze us too much. With a good following from Carlisle and decent acoustics expect a great atmosphere.

How To Get There

By Train

From London, Hartlepool is doable in a day but it’s a far schlep. Trains depart from Kings Cross and most journeys involve a change at Newcastle or North Allerton, although there are a few direct services on Grand Central Trains. Off peak returns are available for £115.90 but cheaper advanced tickets can be picked up if you book good and early.

The Station is about half a mile from the ground. From the main entrance hang a right up Church Street towards the main road. Cross over at the junction with the A689 and the ground is a bit further up Clarence Road on the left hand side.

By Car & Where To Park

The ground is fairly accessible by car with a decent sized car park behind the Millhouse Stand along with street parking nearby. Take a look on the Hartlepool official site for detailed directions.

When Have We Been There Before?

Last season The Cumbrian’s enjoyed our best away win of the season at Victoria Park with a 4-0 win courtesy of a Gary Madine hat trick and a brilliant 40 yard free kick from Lubo. Overall our record isn’t bad at Hartlepool with 13 wins from 45 visits to the Monkey Hangers.

Trivia

Brian Clough began his managerial career at Hartlepool while celebrity supporters include: Sky Sports Jeff Stelling, MP Peter Mandleson, one of the guitarists out of Iron Maiden, Director Ridley Scott and Meat Loaf! The town is famous for having once hanged a monkey and the current mayor got elected in 2002 dressed in a monkey suit under the slogan ‘free bananas for school children’.
