Wells Tavern, 31 Well Street, Exeter, EX4 6QL, 01392 424020. Facebook.

A great little local next to the ground, away fan friendly with 4 real ales and a proper cider available. Some food is served but it was limited to rolls, snacks and pizzas when we were there last. There is a small garden for smokers and well behaved youngsters are welcome.

Great Western Hotel, 31 Well Street, Exeter, EX4 6QL,01392 274039

This large hotel next to Exeter St David’s Station is an excellent watering hole to and from the ground when catching the train to London. Both accommodation and a restaurant are available but the cosy Loco Bar is the main attraction with up to 14 real ales and decent scran.

What’s The Ground Like?

As with many grounds in League One St James’ Park is a mixture of the old and new. On one side of the ground is the old grandstand which is all seated and covered but only about half the length of the pitch (albeit on the half way line). On the other side is the modern all seated Flybe stand which is fairly smart looking with executive boxes at the back. Behind either goal is good old fashioned terracing. Home fans are located in the Big Bank covered terrace while away fans are stuck in the very small and open to the elements St James End. On a wet day you might want to consider getting one of the few covered seats in the old Grandstand allocated to away fans. You will need to walk through the terrace in order to reach the seats so if you buy a seated ticket and the weather turns out nice, you can always stand in the sun behind the goal. It would be fair to say facilities at Exeter are a bit basic but the ground is very friendly and the scran pretty good. Alcohol isn’t available inside the away end but there is a Social Club Bar which apparently lets away fans in.

How To Get There

By Train

From London Exeter St David’s is on the main line out of Paddington and takes just over 2 hours or from Waterloo which takes a bit over 3. From St David’s you can either walk (about 20 mins) or catch the branch line train to St James Park station which takes 6 minutes. If you have time we recommend popping into the Loco Bar at the Great Western for a swift pint before catching the onward train to the ground.

By Car and Where to Park

Exeter is a long way from London and an even longer way from Cumbria so we would recommend you get the train if you fancy heading down from the smoke. If you do fancy driving then directions can be found here.

Parking round the ground is limited with most streets reserved for those with resident permits.

When Have We Been There Before?

Our last visit to St James’ ended in a 2-1 defeat despite Matty Robson’s brilliant free kick bringing the blues back into the game during the 2nd half. The previous season the traveling blues enjoyed a cracking game which Carlisle won 3-2. Exeter looked to have nicked a point with a late equaliser only for Richard Offiong to net a very late winner in injury time. To read a fans view match report from this game, please click here.

Overall our record at Exeter isn’t great with only 4 wins in 24 visits to St James Park.

Trivia

Journeyman striker Richard Offiong had a tough time at Brunton Park, never really getting to grips with League One football. His only ever goal for the Cumbrians was at Exeter in the above game!
