Other Boozers and Food Outlets Worth a Visit

The Longford Engine, 270 Bedworth Road, Longford, Coventry, West Midlands, CV6 6BP Tel: 024 76 645343

The Longford Engine is ideally situated about a mile further along the canal from the Greyhound in the direction of the Ricoh Arena. It’s a lively friendly pub with a decent range of ales, Sky Sports on large screens, reasonably priced scran and a large outside area along the canal. LB members are likely to pop in here for a sly one en route to the match.

How To Get There

By Train

Coventry is on the Virgin main line out of Euston and the quick trains take about an hour. Off peak return fares are over £50 but advanced singles can be obtained for as little £7.50 each way. As always book early to get the best deals. www.virgintrains.co.uk

By Car & Where to Park

Close to the M6, The Ricoh is pretty easy to drive to. Come off at Junction 3, take the A444 towards Coventry city centre and you get to the ground after about a mile. There are a few parking option round the ground but most of the on side spots are reserved for permit holders. There are a number of off-site parking options a short walk from the stadium. Full details of these can be found here.

What's The Ground Like?

After 106 years at Highfield road Coventry City moved to the 32,500 capacity Ricoh Stadium in 2005. It’s a modern bowl style stadium with steep stands and a decent view of the action. By all accounts the acoustics are very good which helps generate a decent atmosphere but the seats are a fair distance from the pitch. The west end of the ground has an exhibition centre attached to it with a casino, shopping centre, hotel and leisure club. Away fans are housed behind the goal in sections 6 & 7 of the South Stand which has accommodation for around 3000 supporters. The concourses are spacious with a decent range of scran and alcohol available. There are also a number of telly screens showing game being played inside the stadium, so you won’t miss any of the action when sneaking out for a cup of Bovril before half time.

When Have We Been There Before?

This will be Carlisle’s’ first visit to the Ricoh Arena and our first trip to Coventry since we were in the top flight in 1974! In total we have played at Coventry on 5 occasions, losing 4 and winning just once back in 1958.

Trivia

Jimmy Hill is considered a legend amongst Coventry fans. He become Coventry’s manager in 1961 and instigated what became known as The Sky Blue Revolution. This involved: changing the home kit colour to sky blue, coining the nickname ‘The Sky Blues’, writing the club song ‘The Sky Blue Song’, producing the first fully fledge match programme in English football and organising pre match entertainment on the pitch. More significantly he took the club from the 3rd division to the top flight in 6 years! He quit the club in 1967 but returned as a director and then chairman in the mid-seventies. As chairman he oversaw Highfield road becoming the first all seater stadium in English football in 1981. This didn’t last however and the Kop End returned to terracing 2 seasons later. There is a statue of Jimmy Hill outside the Ricoh Arena and one of the bar’s in the ground is named Jimmy’s in his honour.
