VHTB - 01/12/09

10 goals in 3 games but more importantly 3 vital league points tonight nudged us up into mid table.

I have had positive vibes from the club about getting Everton tickets due to all members being Teamcard holders but we are awaiting confirmation of ko time, and ticketing arrangements.

Please wait for an official announcement before ordering tickets and ensure that your Ticket Deposit Scheme is topped up.

For those looking at travelling by train from Euston, if the ko is 3pm on Saturday 2nd Jan, the cheapest option looks to be the 0907 and the most logical return will be on the 1848.

If anyone is keen to go by train with the price likely to be £30-£40, please let me know as the earlier we can book the less it will be.

Brunton Park Diary

Nov 25th (Wed)
CARLISLE UTD RESERVES 2 TRANMERE ROVERS RESERVES 1
The Reserves go to the top of the table after this win against a team with a 4 win – 1 loss record. Rothery played in Richardson on 6 for the first and then on 15, the favour’s returned as Rothery curled in Richardson’s pass around the keeper. A late consolation on 81 doesn’t halt Carlisle securing all three points. Burns just edges it as man of the match from Richardson.

Team: Mark Gillespie, Tony Kane, Simon Lakeland (Jamie Cleary 61), Michael Burns, Steven Swinglehurst, Peter Murphy (James Wood 71), Ben McKenna, Jonny Blake, Manny Richardson, Gavin Rothery, Conor Tinnion (Sean Law 46).

According to the BBC site, Ipswich enquires about getting Carlisle’s leading scorer (!) Ian Harte on loan before tomorrow’s deadline. The request is then knocked back by Abbott.

The usual pot of Westwood transfer rumours is given a stir once again with Sunderland this time being the latest club to be interested. Carlisle has a 25% sell-on clause as part of the original transfer.

Nov 26th (Thu)
Paul Simpson makes a deadline bid to take Peter Murphy on loan at Shrewsbury. The inference in the comments given suggests that Abbott was willing to let the deal go ahead but it fell through when the replacement he wanted came to nothing.
One piece of business that does go ahead is Gavin Rothery’s loan spell to Barrow until the New Year. At 22 years old, time’s running out on him making the grade and certainly opinions are divided on whether he’ll make it as a first team regular. Most agree though that the loan spell should do him no harm at all given the quality and number of matches served up in the Reserve league.

Nov 27th (Fri)
Saturday’s Youth Team game at home to Accrington is called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

The News & Star run a story on Carlisle’s attempts to hang on to their guns for hire; Clayton, Pericard and Taiwo, with all three attracting interest from further up the league and the latter meant to be the subject of a firm bid from an unknown side.

CARLISLE UTD 3 NORWICH CITY 1 F.A.CUP ROUND 2
A few seasons ago would have seen the Carlisle players looking to swap shirts with their opposite numbers in a cup game so a dominant second-half display just shows what a performance it was. Hopefully, 150,000 or so will have enjoyed the game as part of the F.A. new live internet coverage of the cup with both clubs receiving £67,500 as part of the deal. With Taiwo suspended and Clayton injured, Murphy is drafted into midfield with Hurst playing just in the hole and Anyinsah wide on the right. Anyinsah’s early cross finds Pericard near the penalty spot and he scores one of the goals of the season with a brilliantly executed volley over his shoulder using the heel of his boot. Norwich get their passing game going and eventually grab an equaliser through Holt’s header. With less than 20 seconds on the clock, Carlisle come straight out of the traps in the 2nd with Pericard bursting through and laying it into the path of Hurst who sweeps a side-footed finish past the keeper just inside the box. It sets the tone for the rest of the game and rather than sit back and defend, Carlisle go on the offensive, continuously pressing the Canaries into mistakes. Keogh’s headed third seals the win and there’s no way back for Paul Lambert’s side.

* Player Ratings: Collin 7, Keogh 7.67, Livesey 7, Harte 7, Horwood 7.17, Murphy 7.67, Kavanagh 6.33, Robson 6.67, Hurst 7, Anyinsah 8.33, Pericard 8.83 (star man).
