A crowd of only 4551 saw a much improved performance and a deserved win that lifted a bit of pressure. It's a home draw against Morecambe in the 1st round of the FA cup.

CELTIC RESERVES 1 CARLISLE UTD RESERVES 1 (friendly)
A late-arranged behind closed doors friendly ends all square thanks to Andy Cook’s belting 78th minute unstoppable right-footed half-volley across their keeper into the far top corner of the Celtic net. Tony Kane returned to right-back after his disappointing loan spell at Darlington (he was dropped from the team for the last two games of his spell) and Murphy had a good run out at centre-half. Offiong went off as a precautionary measure on 20 minutes with a tight hamstring to be replaced by Cook who again showed his qualities up front. Japanese international Kozi Mizuno had earlier given the lead for the Hoops on 49. The game was seen as a success by both management teams and it’s hoped that the same arrangement will be made in years to come.

Along with Kane’s return, it’s confirmed that Kevin Gall also left Darlington after his short-term deal came to an end the day before. Gall had been on a month to month contract and scored two goals.

With Bowman still in the first-team squad, a depleted team go down at mid-table Bury to stay 5th in the table with both goals coming three minutes of the start and finish of the game.

It may not have done Gareth Southgate much good with the Smoggies a few days earlier but Abbott isn’t complaining after a welcome three points at home. Pericard gets ahead of his marker and sweeps home a Dobie cross on 11 as the Cumbrians take the game to the visitors in one of their best half’s of football this season. Harte, having a much better game at centre half, crashes a header against the bar and Robson and a recalled Hurst cause problems down both wings. The good work is partially undone by a Pidgeley flap from a throw-in on 43 to send the teams in at 1-1. Both sides then struggle in the 2nd half but with 10 minutes left on the clock, a headed flick-on from Pericard finds Anyinsah 20 yards out and a crisp right-footed across the keeper sends everyone home happy.

With no Workington or Kendal to worry about after their defeats a day earlier and Barrow facing a trip to Chester City in a replay, the next best thing derby wise is drawn as Carlisle United are paired at home to the League’s current 89th best team, Morecombe, in the first round of the FA Cup. Unsurprisingly, Brunton Park’s office phone hasn’t been ringing off the hook with competing requests from the TV and satellite companies to cover the match live. Two goals from Kavanagh and some judicious spot-kick taking saw Carlisle eventually scrape past them in the same round of the Johnstone Paints trophy at the start of September. All four games against them have finished up as draws…..

A Free Night at the Races
I have been invited to bring as many guests as I can manage on Wednesday 4th November 2009 to a free night at Kempton Park races. First race usually starts at 1750hrs and the last race is about 2120hrs.
Kempton Park Railway station is 45 minutes on the Waterloo to Shepperton Line . Car Parking is free at the course if you want to drive. The racecourse is at the London end of the M3. A bar will remain open after racing for about an hour after the last race.
Please let me know if you would like to attend - you are free to bring friends, relatives etc.just let me know how many so we can confirm details with the Racecourse executive and arrange badges/tickets etc.

The addition of Vincent Pericard may be productive in the long term but the reality is we are already in a relegation scrap following a very poor first half performance at Yeovil. Gary Madine has today gone on loan to Coventry ( see diary Oct 15th ). Do they know something we don't ?

Yeovil Score Sweepstake
Al Millington was less than happy to win the £10 score sweepstake at the Aifield Tavern. He drew 3-1 to Yeovil.

CARLISLE UTD 4 MACCLESFIELD 2 (JOHNSTONE PAINTS 2nd ROUND)
The glorious march to Wembley continues. Although a poor team, Macclesfield manage to score with their only attack as the game goes into injury time in the first half. In the second half, the team is galvanised when Dobie and Anyinsah come on. Robson scores again from range at the keeper’s near post, Dobie’s nets the second with a well taken finish when put through one on one. MBW scores with a rare header to make it 3-1 and minutes later, another defensive shambles sees MBW pull it back to Dobie for 4-1. Rooney scores a late consolation. Rothery doesn’t take his chance to impress during a rare start. Raven picks up an injury in the game and is doubtful for Saturday.

Rumours commence on Vincent Pericard joining the club with him possibly joining training as early as Thursday. These gather pace when he appears in the Directors’ box a few days later at the Norwich match.
Pericard’s last permanent club was Stoke where the Cameroon-born striker scored just four goals in 45 games in all competitions during his three years and was farmed out on loan to both Southampton and then Millwall. He played for Cardiff City in pre-season but wasn’t subsequently offered a deal.
Pericard started his career at French club St Etienne before Italian giants Juventus snapped up the promising youngster. Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp signed the French under-21 international initially on loan during the 2002-2003 season where his impressive performances led Redknapp to sign him on a permanent deal in the summer of 2003. After an injury-plagued three years at Fratton Park where he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury and failed to score in his 14 outings, he was loaned out to Sheffield United and Plymouth Argyle before Portsmouth released him in 2006.
Stoke boss Tony Pulis made Pericard his first signing on a three-year deal on taking over as manager. Pericard endured a controversial spell at the Britannia Stadium as he was sentenced to four months in prison in August 2007 for lying over a speeding conviction. In March 2007, Pericard was snapped doing 103mph in a 70mph zone in his Mercedes CLK 500. He tried claiming his stepfather Jack Henri Pericard was behind the wheel, but what he didn’t know was that British police would track down Mr. Pericard Senior, and confirm that the stepdad had not set foot in the UK for over 3 years! Late in August, Pericard pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice, and was sentenced to 4 months in jail. He was let out early with an electronic tag but was subsequently re-arrested in the October after problems with the device.

A 4-0 thumping away win against the old enemy with Ryan Bowman continuing his run with a hat-trick and 17-year old trialist Mani Richardson the scorers. The Ghanaian-born attack minded player played last season for Dunstable Town having had trials with Southend and Ipswich after being released by Norwich City’s academy. One quote from the Burnley main site stated “Lightening fast striker Mani Richardson looked a constant threat as he darted around the Clarets' half.”
CARLISLE UNITED 0 NORWICH CITY 1
Even the incentive of being Saturday nights ‘star-match’ on the BBC League programme immediately after the Ukraine v England highlights fails to sufficiently inspire the team towards victory. Taiwo tackles his heart out and once again, chances come and go without someone with the necessary killer instinct to take them. In the end, Livesey and Kavanagh are nutmegged by a soft cross leaving Hoolahan with an easy finish.

In the draw for the 4th and final FA Cup qualifying round, it’s Workington v Rushden & Diamonds and Barrow v Chester City. Kendal make up the trio after disposing of Guiseley in a reply, the reward being an away tie at Nuneaton.

The top-of-the-table clash goes the way of the visitors despite goals from Gary Madine and Ryan Bowman as Carlisle lose their 100% record. A young side was fielded with the defence in particular very inexperienced containing as it did a 16-year old, two 17-year olds and an 18-year old, Ben Richards-Everton making his second-string debut as part of the back-line. Old-boy Adam ‘Let’s Get Ready To’ Rundle featured and impressed for Rochdale on his return from injury.

It’s confirmed by the club that as a nominated training facility and international team base for one of the teams, Carlisle is officially backing Sunderland’s bid to be one of the chosen grounds should England’s 2018 WC bid be successful. Darlington, Hartlepool and Middlesborough would offer similar facilities as part of the overall bid on behalf of the Black Cats.

In perhaps one of the most surprising stories of the season, it’s rumoured that Gary Madine is being lined up for a shock three-month loan move to Championship side Coventry City.
Cumbrian extremists take note – the “Ooh Arr A” or Cornish Republican Army has launched a new campaign to scare students out of the county, along with second homers. The chilling words "Penryn has had enough of students" with the tag CRA were visible to visitors to University College Falmouth's open day. The CRA are, of course, the successors to the Cornish National Liberation Army, who are of course the successors to the Cornish Liberation Army and probably in the past, the Cornish Peoples Popular Front.

The Youth team draw Accrington Stanley out of the bag for the First Round of the FA Youth Cup in a repeat of the 2nd Round game last season. On that occasion, Carlisle won 3-0 as Andy Cook and Ryan Bowman netted in the first-half and Liam Davison scored after the interval. This year the team have already won 3-1 at Accrington in the league in early September, Bowman with a brace and Matt Osmond being the goalscorers in that match. Ties are scheduled to take place by November 7th.

CARLISLE UTD YOUTH 3 MORECOMBE YOUTH 0
Even with Bowman joining the first-team squad on the long trip to Yeovil, Carlisle are far too strong for Morecambe and record their 6th win to stay in touch with the leaders. With their attack held well at bay (insert joke here), goals from Mark Sloan, Manny Richardson and Liam Davison gave opposition keeper Adam Bee a busy time (stop now – Ed) over the 90 minutes.
Andy Cook comes off the bench to score the second in Barrow’s 2-0 win over Ebbsfleet. A Paul Arnison goal secures the location of any intruders.
YEOVIL TOWN 3 CARLISLE UNITED 1
The team play like strangers in the first half with Horwood and Harte in particular having a torrid time down the flanks. An early second-half penalty converted by Harte gives some hope and a couple of chances for what would probably be an undeserved equaliser come and go before Yeovil wrap it up in the 87th. Players who seemed to going well a few weeks ago (e.g. Hurst, Anyinsah) seem to be going backwards.

A Free Night at the Races
I have been invited to bring as many guests as I can manage on Wednesday 4th November 2009 to a free night at Kempton Park races. First race usually starts at 1750hrs and the last race is about 2120hrs.
Kempton Park Railway station is 45 minutes on the Waterloo to Shepperton Line . Car Parking is free at the course if you want to drive. The racecourse is at the London end of the M3. A bar will remain open after racing for about an hour after the last race.
Please let me know if you would like to attend - you are free to bring friends, relatives etc.just let me know how many so we can confirm details with the Racecourse executive and arrange badges/tickets etc.

CARLISLE UTD 4 MACCLESFIELD 2 (JOHNSTONE PAINTS 2nd ROUND)
The glorious march to Wembley continues. Although a poor team, Macclesfield manage to score with their only attack as the game goes into injury time in the first half. In the second half, the team is galvanised when Dobie and Anyinsah come on. Robson scores again from range at the keeper’s near post, Dobie’s nets the second with a well taken finish when put through one on one. MBW scores with a rare header to make it 3-1 and minutes later, another defensive shambles sees MBW pull it back to Dobie for 4-1. Rooney scores a late consolation. Rothery doesn’t take his chance to impress during a rare start. Raven picks up an injury in the game and is doubtful for Saturday.

Rumours commence on Vincent Pericard joining the club with him possibly joining training as early as Thursday. These gather pace when he appears in the Directors’ box a few days later at the Norwich match.
Pericard’s last permanent club was Stoke where the Cameroon-born striker scored just four goals in 45 games in all competitions during his three years and was farmed out on loan to both Southampton and then Millwall. He played for Cardiff City in pre-season but wasn’t subsequently offered a deal.
Pericard started his career at French club St Etienne before Italian giants Juventus snapped up the promising youngster. Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp signed the French under-21 international initially on loan during the 2002-2003 season where his impressive performances led Redknapp to sign him on a permanent deal in the summer of 2003. After an injury-plagued three years at Fratton Park where he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury and failed to score in his 14 outings, he was loaned out to Sheffield United and Plymouth Argyle before Portsmouth released him in 2006.
Stoke boss Tony Pulis made Pericard his first signing on a three-year deal on taking over as manager. Pericard endured a controversial spell at the Britannia Stadium as he was sentenced to four months in prison in August 2007 for lying over a speeding conviction. In March 2007, Pericard was snapped doing 103mph in a 70mph zone in his Mercedes CLK 500. He tried claiming his stepfather Jack Henri Pericard was behind the wheel, but what he didn’t know was that British police would track down Mr. Pericard Senior, and confirm that the stepdad had not set foot in the UK for over 3 years! Late in August, Pericard pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice, and was sentenced to 4 months in jail. He was let out early with an electronic tag but was subsequently re-arrested in the October after problems with the device.

A 4-0 thumping away win against the old enemy with Ryan Bowman continuing his run with a hat-trick and 17-year old trialist Mani Richardson the scorers. The Ghanaian-born attack minded player played last season for Dunstable Town having had trials with Southend and Ipswich after being released by Norwich City’s academy. One quote from the Burnley main site stated “Lightening fast striker Mani Richardson looked a constant threat as he darted around the Clarets' half.”

Even the incentive of being Saturday nights ‘star-match’ on the BBC League programme immediately after the Ukraine v England highlights fails to sufficiently inspire the team towards victory. Taiwo tackles his heart out and once again, chances come and go without someone with the necessary killer instinct to take them. In the end, Livesey and Kavanagh are nutmegged by a soft cross leaving Hoolahan with an easy finish.

A young side was fielded with the defence in particular very inexperienced containing as it did a 16-year old, two 17-year olds and an 18-year old, Ben Richards-Everton making his second-string debut as part of the back-line. Old-boy Adam ‘Let’s Get Ready To’ Rundle featured and impressed for Rochdale on his return from injury.

It’s confirmed by the club that as a nominated training facility and international team base for one of the teams, Carlisle is officially backing Sunderland’s bid to be one of the chosen grounds should England’s 2018 WC bid be successful. Darlington, Hartlepool and Middlesborough would offer similar facilities as part of the overall bid on behalf of the Black Cats.

In perhaps one of the most surprising stories of the season, it’s rumoured that Gary Madine is being lined up for a shock three-month loan move to Championship side Coventry City.
Cumbrian extremists take note – the “Ooh Arr A” or Cornish Republican Army has launched a new campaign to scare students out of the county, along with second homers. The chilling words "Penryn has had enough of students" with the tag CRA were visible to visitors to University College Falmouth's open day. The CRA are, of course, the successors to the Cornish National Liberation Army, who are of course the successors to the Cornish Liberation Army and probably in the past, the Cornish Peoples Popular Front.

The Youth team draw Accrington Stanley out of the bag for the First Round of the FA Youth Cup in a repeat of the 2nd Round game last season. On that occasion, Carlisle won 3-0 as Andy Cook and Ryan Bowman netted in the first-half and Liam Davison scored after the interval. This year the team have already won 3-1 at Accrington in the league in early September, Bowman with a brace and Matt Osmond being the goalscorers in that match. Ties are scheduled to take place by November 7th.

Even with Bowman joining the first-team squad on the long trip to Yeovil, Carlisle are far too strong for Morecambe and record their 6th win to stay in touch with the leaders. With their attack held well at bay (insert joke here), goals from Mark Sloan, Manny Richardson and Liam Davison gave opposition keeper Adam Bee a busy time (stop now – Ed) over the 90 minutes.
Andy Cook comes off the bench to score the second in Barrow’s 2-0 win over Ebbsfleet. A Paul Arnison goal secures the location of any intruders.
YEOVIL TOWN 3 CARLISLE UNITED 1
The team play like strangers in the first half with Horwood and Harte in particular having a torrid time down the flanks. An early second-half penalty converted by Harte gives some hope and a couple of chances for what would probably be an undeserved equaliser come and go before Yeovil wrap it up in the 87th. Players who seemed to going well a few weeks ago (e.g. Hurst, Anyinsah) seem to be going backwards.

The trip to Walsall saw another exiting end to a game spoilt by windy conditions. It's always worth waiting until the final whistle when you watch United !
It's now a quarter of the way through the season so unfortunately if you are yet to renew your LB membership, this will be your last vhtb and the Hit the Bar ! due to arrive next week will be your last.

Oct 2nd (Fri)
Former CUFC defender Darren Campion, still only 20, signs for Blue Square North club Solihull Moors. Solihull, who lie 3 places below Workington in 18th, put him in his most accustomed position the next day, a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Southport.
Meanwhile, former striking legend Richard Tracey (30) signs for Stocksbridge Park Steels having turned out for KoolSport Northern Counties East League side Maltby Main earlier in the season. Yes, really. SPS are 3rd in the Unibond Premier, a league headed by the might of Kendal Town. In his first game, Carlos Roca (yes, that one) scores an injury time winner as opponents FC United came back from 3-1 down to beat them 4-3 at Gigg Lane. An injury time winner for a team from Manchester, who would have thought it?

CARLISLE UTD YOUTH 1 PRESTON NORTH END YOUTH 2
A tough draw in the Youth Alliance Cup against league leaders PNE ends in a first-round exit for the Cumbrians. In a match played in a near gale, Carlisle didn’t make use of the wind at their backs during a first half in which they fell behind 1-0 on 19 minutes. It was 2-0 on 76 from a cross slid-in across the 6-yard box before a disputed penalty converted by Bowman on 83 gave us a consolation.
WALSALL 2 CARLISLE UNITED 2
A poor advert for L1 football in a windswept soulless Floors-2-Go stadium, the conditions were the only winner in a game played between two sides destined for the bottom eight end of season bun fight on this showing. Robson and Keogh were both the scorers and probably the only two to emerge with their reputations improved. The other main credit was that the team played for the full 45 in each half with both equalisers coming towards the end on both occasions.

You will have no doubt read about the Centenary celebrations on saturday at Brunton Park. Part of the celebration was a free 64 page magazine handed out to fans at the game and available to pick up at numerous outlets around Cumbria.
Branch members will be pleased to know that they wll receive this magazine by post, so that they don't miss out.
The Branch are paying for the postage. If there are any members who are willing to sponsor some or all of this cost please let me know.

I do not have London Branch members 14 digit Teamcard numbers which I need to quote when ordering match tickets, thus accrueing loyalty points. Please therefore send me them if you use the Ticket Deposit Scheme. If you have renewed your LB membership you should have received a Teamcard posted direct to you by CUFC. Please let me know if you have missed out and I will chase it up.
