LEICESTER 6 UNITED 0
By Howard Atkinson
A small group of United’s loyal exiles assembled at St Pancras on a drab Saturday morning. We were travelling with the Leicester London Branch to save money on train fares. Or at least some of us were - but more of that later.
Hope springs eternal, and we headed North feeling confident of a draw at least – most of us had been at Derby. How naïve we were.
The journey passed pleasantly and quickly. We soon had the cards out and were playing pontoon for modest stakes, the Social secretary proving that the banker can’t lose by losing steadily. More chance getting a winner on the Club bingo tickets.
Then just as I was beginning to win back my losses B.R. let me down by reaching Leicester on time! Meeting a mate of Mike Whitehead’s we adjourned to the nearest local hostelry. Where else? Here we partook of several excellent beers before seeking a chippy. In the end we route marched to the ground and found a fair sized group of home based Blues at one end of the ground.
Well, I’ve put it off for as long as possible but I suppose I’d better report on the match itself. Our ‘heroes’ began the game in confident mood and seemed in control, but you sensed it was going to be one of those days when Poskett managed to do a genuine Bobby Owen from close range, i.e. missed a sitter. Then the defence collapsed like Freddy Laker and we were lucky to let in only six. It could have been worse, much worse.
We conceded not one, not two but THREE penalties. All converted – where was Rossy?? The fact that Houghton gave two away yet stayed on the field showed how dangerous the ref. thought the Leicester strikers were. Under the new regime you are sent off if a foul prevents a goal being scored. The last penalty was straight from a Whitehall farce;-
1. Swinburne was covering the cross.
2. The ball was going wide of the far post.
3. No Leicester player was near the ball.
……….so big Keith caught it!
They tell me that knocker is from the N.E. mining area. On this performance he certainly played like it - a pit pony! Mind you, he wasn’t the only one. The local sports special summed it up with the Man-of-the-Match award for the away team. Quote: “There wasn’t one.” Personally I feel Swinburne deserved it because he had the ball longer than anyone else.
As someone else would say: “What a shower.” On this performance United had as much chance of scoring as we have of getting our darts flights. It can only get better, can’t it?
In a state of shock as we left the ground, one member felt worse than the rest of us. Stewart West had got the meeting time wrong. Thinking he’d missed us he bought a full priced train ticket costing a lot more than our £4! Oh dear, not really ‘Jimmy’s’ day. To make matters worse the pubs didn’t open until our train was due. Thus we drowned our sorrows with a B.R. buffet special of warm dross. Obviously they got the recipe for Grotneys Red Barrel when Grotneys stopped ‘making’ it.
Jimmy’s luck improved on the way back and he won more of my money at cards. I wouldn’t mind but whose cards are they.
Once back in London we enjoyed an excellent Indian meal before planning our next adventure to Cambridge. Undaunted it was agreed that we would go to the Cambridge game. After all, we are all Carlisle fans and you have to take the rough with the smooth. Next week……
Team: Best to draw a veil over the whole thing.
Leicester: Lynex and Lyneker - they didn’t need anyone else.
P.S. Old Wilkie suggested we all go to the Leicester game. Guess which of us found an excuse not to go in the end?

Golden Gamble
The club are trying to set up their biggest ever Golden Gamble half-time draw prize fund for the Oldham game on Good Friday. The previous best is £1800 for the Sheffield Wednesday Cup match. Normally the tickets would only be sold at the ground on a match day but this time they have been distributed around shops in the area and a few fans have taken books in a bid to boost the prize fund. A number of local businesses have kindly donated prizes to supplement the 2 cash prizes. The tickets cost £1 for a blue or white, buy both for £2 and receive a yellow free. The London branch will receive 10% commission for the first 100 tickets sold and 20% for all tickets sold above 100.
They will be available to buy at Leicester or by sending a cheque payable to CUSCLB to me at 11 Cedar Road, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5DA to arrive before 7th April.

Another shuffle of the pack did little to improve the end result yesterday when we were well beaten by a bigger, stronger and often more committed Southend team. The two home games this week take on extra significance. Gary Madine has gone out on loan to Rochdale.
