Summer Trip 2012 - Lisbon

SUMMER TRIP 2012 LISBON

As you all should know by now the Carlisle United Supporters Club London Branch Annual Summer Trip is heading for the beautiful Portuguese city of Lisbon.

Date: Friday 15th June until Monday 18th June

Please feel free only to come for two nights and go home on the Sunday just let me know.

Lisbon is a beautiful city with a contemporary culture that is alive and thriving. Perched on the edge of the Atlantic it is one of the few European cities that face the ocean and the sea is a focal point that defines everything about the city. Lisbon enchants travellers with its white bleached limestone buildings, intimate alleyways and an easy going charm that makes it a popular year around destination.

For those who are not familiar with the Summer Trips the plan is very simple. I am the Trip organiser and I organise (with the valuable help from Mike Carruthers and his travel agent brother!) the hotel, a group evening meal on the Friday and a walking tour of the city (probably on the Saturday). There will also be a venue to watch the England V Sweden Euro match which is on at 6pm on the Friday evening.

I may organise another group outing to another tourist attraction but this would be on a casual basis and numbers and details organised far nearer the time.

The rest of the time is very flexible. I will discover a decent local bar which will work as a standard meeting point and after that it is up to everyone to do what they like. There are always people to go off in a group with and also plenty of time to disappear off by yourself for a while.

I am really keen to encourage new people to attend the Summer Trip. The Summer Trip is a fantastic opportunity to get to know the others in the CUSCLB in a relaxed and informal way. Many members bring along their partners and for many it is the yearly dose of the delights of CUSCLB! I attended my first Summer Trip last year in Berlin and thought it was so much fun I volunteered to run it this year and am also bringing my partner Anna with me!

Hotel:

I have chosen a hotel which I hope provides a good balance between value and comfort. The hotel is a 3* and has received decent reviews. The hotel is well placed in a quiet and safe part of the city but only a short walk to the historical city and the bars and restaurants.

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g189158-d233038-Reviews-Hotel_Jorge_V-Lisbon_Estremadura.html

The price works out at £28 per person per night. This is based on 2 sharing. However there will be plenty of single travellers so let me know and I will pair you up. The price includes breakfast.

Flights:

The best value flights are on Easy Jet. They have flights out of Gatwick , Luton, Edinburgh and Liverpool. I personally think the best options for London based members are out of Luton as the times allow you to make it to Lisbon in plenty of time for the evening match. At present flights are about £80 return which is pretty dam good! Both BA and Tap Portugal also have flights.

We really need to get things booked pretty soon so I ask you to let me know as soon as possible if you plan on coming. Please fill out the booking form and email it back to me at summertrip@carlislelondonbranch.org. You can download the booking form here.

Deadline:

This is the important bit! To get the ball rolling I need to know soon. So the deadline is SUNDAY 12th FEBRUARY. After this I will be making room reservations based on the number confirmed. It would still be possible to book after that however I cannot guarantee that the price will remain the same. So please do not delay!!!

Email me at summertrip@carlislelondonbranch.org.

The trip will be dam good fun for all so come on and book your place.

I look forward to hearing from you.

NEW NEWS

Supporters' Football AFC Wimbledon Feb 18th

The supporters match against AFC Wimbledon has been confirmed for Saturday Feb 18th at Kings Meadow. Later in the day the Dons are playing Morecambe so why not stay to watch that game? Please get in touch with Chris Tembey for details football@carlislelondonbranch.org

Thanks to John Stevenson MP

16 members attended a branch meeting in the Houses of Parliament last Thursday and then had a very enjoyable chat over drinks on the terrace with Carlisle MP John Stevenson last Thursday. A hearty thanks to John from all that attended and from all in the branch for kindly donating a prize for the Shine The Light raffle.

Thanks to Dave Walters and Hastings United

Branch member Dave Walters is chairman of Hastings United in the Rymans Premier League and on Saturday 7 members travelled to Hastings to watch their match against Billericay as Dave's guests. We had a cracking day out and received a warm welcome by everyone there. It felt strange to be drinking a pint while watching the game. Afterwards we visited a local Indian restaurant and heard the inside story from Dave of the trails and tribulations of keeping a lower league side running successfully. A big thank you to Dave and all at Hastings FC and we can highly recommend a day out there for any member in travelling distance. www.hastingsunitedfc.co.uk

Re MK Dons

The problem with the written word is that very soon afterwards you can look a bit of an eejit.

Having put forward a very cynical view of the postponement of our game on Saturday, I am amazed at MKDons response to the obvious mistakes made by the ground staff. It seems that our tickets will be refunded in full as you would expect BUT they have also offered to give Carlisle fans free tickets AND an extra ticket for a friend for the rearranged game. They have also offered the free ticket for a friend to their own supporters. Added to this they will pay for two coaches to come down from Carlisle and I gather on Saturday that they provided free food and drink to Carlisle fans in the supporters bar. All on top of huge apologies from Peter Winkelman and Carl Robinson.

The sign of good customer service is how they respond to a problem. In this case the board and staff of MK dons have responded superbly. Well done to all.

Re Jordan Cook

Welcome to what looks like another great loan player from Sunderland with 20 year old prolific goal scorer Jordan Cook joining us for a months loan.

Good times to be a Carlisle fan.

Virtual Hit The Bar - 16/01/12

Call me a cynic but was the fact that the MK Franchise game was the only one to be called off in the FL anything to do with a certain FA Cup replay match on Tuesday against QPR with the prize of Chelsea in the next round going to the victor? Nearby Northampton managed to get their game on while MK admitted they hadn't covered all their pitch on Friday night. In fairness to Peter Winkleman, he has apologised publicly to Carlisle fans and offered to pay for one coach for the rearranged game. The LB will be discussing this on Thursday with a view to getting compensation for LB members but don't hold your breath for the reply.

The silver lining to the debacle was a delightful afternoon in the Red Lion at Fenney Stratford chatting to lots of branch members. We were delighted to welcome two new members signed up by Dave Croxford, Mark Morgan and Martin Thomas. I also had a lovely chat with Damien Samuels from Wolverhampton who brought along some old programmes to view , and gave me a copy of Olga the Fox fanzine from 1994. Simon Davey was interviewed on his arrival from Swansea and in answer to the differences with the two clubs stated "Carlisle is a much bigger club than Swansea and has a lot more ambition".

Happy New Year to all members and their families and friends. After a welcome break and an unbeaten Xmas period culminating in that fantastic win over the Blades, we get the great news of Manchester City Chris Chantler signing for 18 months. On Wednesday night, LB Chairman Simon Clarkson was heard to say that he thought Chris had been held back from playing to make sure he was signed and sealed before anyone else could get a look in because he was so good. Lets hope he is right. Personally I am hoping for a new LB, CB and Liam Noble signing permanent. Who do you hope to sign - let us know on twitter.

Owls About That Then!!!!

Tuesday 25th October 2011 was the date, The Zeppelin Shelter the Venue, and a night of frivolities were awaiting the dozen Cumbrian Charvers to the dirty old East End of London.
300 miles away, there was a packed house at Brunton Park, watching their own entertainment, the wonders of technology meaning the pub in London could broadcast the Radio commentary from Carlisle.

There was no Real Ale on tap, but Cumbrian’s didn’t get bitter about it.

The Pool:

Reigning Champ, Jon McGloughlin called the toss right and broke, potting a red in the process the first of many balls on a great night for Jon. Tony Little his adversary could only watch in awe as Jon wrapped up the First match. Paul, Jugs and Big John all followed suit against JohnathOn Lerew, Simon C and Mike C respectively. All closely contested matches. Elsewhere Carlilse had fought back to a 2-1 lead against Sheffield Wednesday, Marshall opened scoring against his old club, but Miller and Loy both getting loud applause in East London.

Al lost against an impressive Ken in the Q-Final, both having byes in first round. Jon saw off Paul, and then surprise package Simon H, disposed of Jugsy, just as the referee disposed of Madine back at BP. Jugsy had 2 reds left, Madine ruing his 2 yellows !! John rounded up Quarters with win over Dave B.

The semis were less closely fought. As Noble bagged a third for Carlisle, a jubilant Ken (less nobly) potted the black in error, his mind 300 miles away, so Jon booked his place in the Final. It wasn’t long before Dr John joined him, leaving Simon H with 4 balls on the table.

The Final:

John became only the second player to pot from the break, but Jon was on the black before his next one.
There was controversy with the cue ball touching a yellow, when it was Johns go. Jugsy decided that as a reward for the snooker that Jon had deliberately played, big John would have to play away. This began a real game of cat and mouse and Dr John 6 balls remaining slowly nursed back Jon, snookering and potting until they were both on the black. It was the ambitious John , who managed to double the black the full length of the table who eventually won.

Best of three, and this time Jon broke. It was like watching Brazil against Russia. The flair and yellow of El Jonno’s play against the more controlled efficiency of Czar John. Again Jon looked most impressive, making all the early play. He rattled two shots on the black to ghasts from the fans, and cooly and calmly up stepped John, devouring the last red, potting the black and stripping Jon of his Pool Champ title.

The Darts:

Simon Headley got nearest to the Bull and commenced the 301 Dart competition. His opponent JohnathOn Lerew brought back fond memories of a certain Alistair Blackett, such was his spring loaded arm movements in releasing his spears. Simon H got his double and Al, John and Jugsys all followed suit into the Q-Finals. Due to lack of players Al was awarded a bye into the Semi’s, Paul won on nearest the bull rule when he and Simon H couldn’t get a double for toffee. Big John wrestled his way past Mike C (a winning double for John over Mike in pool and darts). Jugsy couldn’t contain Simon C who got pool revenge with a well taken double 4. In the Semi’s the matches were taking longer, not quicker, as the doubles alluded. Al and Paul were told after next throw that they would have to play nearest the bull to determine who played in the Final, and spurred on Al threw his double One. John literally threw his darts, as in threw in the towel to concentrate on his pool Final, so by default Simon C was in the Final only having played and won once !! Another great high scoring game brought these two finalists to their doubles. Al was on his favoured double one, but it was Simon C, on double 8, sweet sixteen, who took the spoils, for the wild celebrations to commence (or was that the Final whistle at BP where Carlisle had beaten Sheff Wed 3-2 ?)

Summary:

Carlisle won first match under the new Floodlights, the London Branch had a lot of fun (and beer) with John unbeaten in two competitions, Jon Mc incredible at pool, and Simon C spawning the darts.

Innov the Red
