Branch Meeting
The next Branch meeting has been brought forward a week to Thursday 13th January.
Summer Trip
An update from Mike Carruthers:
Having been to Berlin this year, it didn't get my vote (Ljubljana was my choice). That said, Berlin is one of my favourite cities and an excellent choice.
I have a quote for The Abba Hotel which will work out at around £50 per person per night for bed and breakfast. The link for the hotel website is below. For those familiar with the trip advisor website, I've also included a link to the reviews for the hotel. It is rated as 24th out of 639 Berlin Hotels by trip advisor. It is in a very good location close to Kurfurstendamm (Berlin's main shopping street) and Zoologischer Garten -West Berlin's main transport hub.
http://www.abbaberlinhotel.com/en/
http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g187323-d1483688-Reviews-Abba_Berlin_Hotel-Berlin.html
The standard trip is for three nights from Friday 10th June but people can, of course, add extra nights if they wish. One thing that I have just been made aware of is that Monday 13th June is a bank holiday in Germany and a lot of people will be leaving on this day. If you are travelling to the airport on public transport, you will need to bear this in mind although I suspect we will find that it is probably less troublesome than travelling around the UK can be. If you wish me to reserve a room for you, I need to know the following:
1. What type of room you require:
a) Double
b) Twin (Please note - if you are a single traveller but happy to share a twin room please put "Share Twin")
c) Single
2. The names of all the people in your party.
3. Confirmation of:
a) Your arrival date
b) The number of nights you are staying
If you are staying extra nights please make clear the dates you want to stay and total number of nights.
As a number of people have booked flights already, I would like to make our reservation as soon as possible. I would be grateful therefore for responses by Wednesday 15th December. I will make a booking based on responses received. If you are unable to commit before that date, I can always try and secure extra rooms later (although I can't guarantee that the price will be the same).
A word about airports. There are two:
Tegel is 5 miles from the centre of Berlin and my travel guide (published in 2004) suggests a taxi would cost 12 to 15 Euros (so allowing for infltion maybe around 20 Euros). There is also a bus service to Zoologischer Garten/Kurfurstendamm.
Schoenefeld is 12 miles from the centre of Berlin and is the old East Berlin airport (Easyjet fly into here). There is a an airport shuttle train that goes from the airport and which stops at Zoologischer Garten. It is very cheap about 3 Euros. Taxis from Schoenefeld aren't cheap and will probably cost around 35 Euros.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Please contact me with any queries at summertrip@carlislelondonbranch.org

An update from Mike Carruthers
" Berlin was the choice of the democracy and the weekend of Friday 10th June seemed to work best for most. I will be researching hotels and can provide prices for any travellers based on their requirements. There are plenty of flight options into either of the two Berlin airports, both of which provide good access to the City. You should book your own travel ASAP to get the best price.
As has been traditional, I will look to book a restaurant on the Friday evening for a group meal. Please contact me with any queries at summertrip@carlislelondonbranch.org
NPower Project
This £2m Home Team Heroes initiative will be run over the course of npower’s three year sponsorship with the Football League - will ask fans from all 72 clubs in England & Wales to vote on how this money should be spent.
Each Football League club will have a project, so fans only have to vote for a project that will benefit their own community.
The three projects are:
- A 'respect' training workshop for ten year-olds run in schools with a focus on team work and citizenship
- Football skills training for 4 - 6 year-olds run by the club's community coaches
- Improvement/clean up of a local park into a more football friendly space
The three projects for Carlisle can be found here.
