Brunton Park Diary - April 2012

Apr. 3rd (Tue)

CARLISLE UNITED XI 4 GILLFORD PARK 0 – CUMBERLAND CUP SEMI-FINAL
Josh Todd, Paddy Madden, Brad Potts and Andy Welsh all found the onion bag as United progressed to the final as expected. Several former Blues were in the Park side including Lee Hoolickin, Graham Anthony, Craig Wilson, Michael Brown, Michael Reed, Marc Shield and James Earl. Potts’ 25-yard belter on 25 minutes to make it 3-0 was the pick of the bunch and effectively ended the game as a contest. The team will now meet Harraby Catholic Club on Tuesday, May 1st at 7pm.

United: Gillespie, McGlen, Michalik (Symington 68), O'Halloran, Robson (Minor 46), Thirwell, Potts, Todd, Madden, Beck, Welsh.

Apr. 4th (Wed)

Greg Abbott is nominated with Ronnie Moore of Tranmere and Dave Jones of Sheffield Wednesday for March’s Manager of the Month award. It’s confirmed a couple of days later that he’s narrowly missed the curse with the award going to Jones.

WYCOMBE W. 1 CARLISLE UTD 1
A number of talking points in a fine end-to-end game, the main one being Noble’s one on one with the keeper being ended by his pursuer shoving him in the back and neither giving away a penalty or going off for an early bath. Some of the heat from the incident was taken away by Carlisle almost immediately going back up the pitch and scoring after Zoko’s fine run had brought a first time shot from McGovern that cannoned off the crossbar and hit the defender tracking back before settling in the corner of the net. Chances were few and far between after that and it looked 1-0 all the way until a cruel equaliser as the match entered injury time, even more so after another New York style assault on Miller in the Wycombe build up.

Player Ratings (MK): Collin 7, Simek 6, Chantler (injured), Livesey 7, Murphy 7, McGovern 6, Taiwo 8, Noble 7, Berrett 7, Zoko 7, Miller 7. Sub: Michalik 7.

CARLISLE UTD YOUTH 5 PORT VALE YOUTH 1
The Youth team seem determined to finish the season in style and goals from Todd (2), Potts, Symington and Brough set up the victory in a fine team display.

Apr. 9th (Mon)

CARLISLE UTD 0 SCUNTHORPE UTD 0
Scunny’s 11-man defence was just too good on the day as a way couldn’t be found past one of the form teams in the division.

*Player Ratings: Collin 7, Simek 6, Michalik 6, Livesey 7, Murphy 6, McGovern 6, Taiwo 8 (star man), Noble 6, Berrett 6, Zoko 6, Cook 7.

Apr. 11th (Wed)

The fear that Miller and Chantler will miss the rest of the campaign is confirmed by the results of respective scans on their groin and hamstring injuries.

United's stadium manager David Mitchell is deservedly shortlisted as a finalist in the Unsung Hero category of The Stadium Business Awards. The awards recognise various achievements from across the global stadium industry and this year’s ceremony takes place in Milan on May 15th.

SHREWSBURY YOUTH 2 CARLISLE UTD YOUTH 3
Brough, Todd and Potts scored the goals as Carlisle came from behind twice to move themselves clear in 4th place and joint highest scorers in the league with 57 goals from 22 games.

Apr. 14th (Sat)
CARLISLE UTD 0 CHARLTON ATH 1
The Addicks completed a hat-trick of promotion wins at Brunton Park going back to the early 80s. The best of several chances for Carlisle came early in the second half when Cook’s ball was stepped over by McGovern allowing Noble to drill his shot on the angle past the keeper but unfortunately, onto the inside of the post and out into play. The chance was a wake-up call to Charlton who went up a gear and tested Collin with a number of well-saved efforts before Wright-Phillips inevitably poached the winner from a knock-back following a corner. Youth team player Mark Beck enjoyed a lively 10 minutes at the end after coming on for his debut.

*Player Ratings: Collin 8.5 (= star man), Simek 7.0, Livesey 7.5, Murphy 8.0, Michalik 7.0, McGovern 6.5, Taiwo 7.5, Noble 8.5 (= star man), Berrett 7.0, Zoko 7.5, Cook 8.5 (= star man).

35 year-old Brett Ormerod, presently at Blackpool, is one of those rumoured as being lined up to train with Carlisle over the summer with a view to a deal. Won’t be the last.

Stadium Manager Dave Mitchell once again scoops the Division One “Look, you can play bowls on that!” award for 2011/2.

STEVENAGE 1 CARLISLE UTD 0
Could this be the end of the play-off dream? Stevenage started well with the wing-backs doubling up on the wing and causing Murph and Simek all kinds of problems. Once we settled down a bit, the midfield got a foothold in the game and it set up a second half where there only looked like one winner - Carlisle. Like Wycombe 11 days earlier, it took a quick ball to the box followed by a wonder strike to beat Collin. Welsh and to a lesser extent Madden were lively additions, beating Stevenage at their own game and using the space on the wings to good effect. Pity that Cook was probably still watching his groin although he lasted the full 90 and Zoko seemed to be blowing out of his backside after about 10 minutes. Livesey could have had a hat-trick and I never thought I'd ever say that. Walsh's miss from about 7 yards when in front of goal will still be haunting him (and everyone in the away end) for years to come.

Player Ratings (MK): Collin 6, Simek 6, Livesey 7, Murphy 6, Michalik 6, McGovern 5, Taiwo 6, Noble 5, Berrett 5, Zoko 5, Cook 6. Subs: Welsh 8 (star man), Madden 6.

BURNLEY YOUTH 1 CARLISLE UTD YOUTH 2
No problem with firing blanks for the youngsters as goals from Todd and Potts severely dent Burnley’s title chances with a fine comeback to secure victory. First-year goalkeeper Jordan Parker was again man of the match. It couldn’t happen to a nicer club!

Top four as things stand:

Preston North End 23 18 2 3 58 21 56
Burnley 22 17 1 4 50 24 52

It’s big news day at Brunton Park

Mark Beck, Josh Todd, Brad Potts and Dave Symington are all rewarded for their endeavours with one-year professional contracts following their two-year YTS spell at Brunton Park. The unlucky ones to be released are defender and Youth team skipper Lance McGlen as well as strikers Adam Gill and Dan Jones.

New home and away kits for 2012/3 manufactured by JDSports-owned brand Fila will be on sale ahead of the final home league game of the season against Exeter City.

Season ticket and general admission prices for 2012-13 are announced, which includes a new Young Person's category for people aged 18-22 with admission from just £10 per game (less than £9 with a season ticket). SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 2 CARLISLE UTD 1
Or ‘Haves 2 Have Nots 1’. A cruel winner scored in the 95th minute denied a share of the points after an improved second-half performance was capped by a late equaliser from Berrett. Collin’s fine performance between the sticks kept United in the game in the first 45 as a disjointed Carlisle struggled to get going. On a day when a certain World Championship started just across the city at The Crucible, the result leaves the Blues as good as needing snookers.

Player Ratings: Collin 8.5 (star man), Simek 5, Livesey 7.5, Murphy 4, Michalik 7, Taiwo 5, Noble 7.5, Berrett 6, Zoko 7, Cook 4.5, Madden 5. Subs: McGovern 6, Welsh 6, Robson 7.

*Calculated from player ratings on the CUFC Online messageboard.

Apr.27th (Fri)

With Darlington FC seemingly in the process of winding up most of their operation, promising keeper Lewis Brass and centre-half Jake Chisholm jump ship to Brunton Park faster than you can say “Look Out! There’s an Italian Captain” and join the other first years on the YTS scheme.

Apr. 28th (Sat)

CARLISLE UTD 4 EXETER CITY 1
A moving half-time tribute to Lee Miller’s departed wife Donna with their three boys on the pitch, a relegation, two more in the onion bag for the sublime Zoko, goalkeeper fumbles from past and present, managing not to lose in a new home kit, penalties and shots hitting every part of the Brunton Park woodwork, a fine finish from Cook in his last loan game, defenders frequently on their backside, a fight with a lawnmower for Liam Noble; this game had just about everything.

* Player Ratings: Collin 3.67, Simek 5.67, Livesey 7.17, Robson 6.00, Michalik 5.33, Noble 7.50, McGovern 6.67, Welsh 6.17, Berrett 6.17, Zoko 7.67 (star man), Cook 6.50. Subs: Taiwo 7.00.
