Brunton Park Diary - July 2012

July 2nd (Mon)

Carlisle’s goal-getting midfielder James Berrett agrees a new 2-year deal. One player not coming our way is Stuart Parnaby after he re-signs for Middlesborough ending speculation after talks with the versatile defender.

According to reports, local non-league outfit Gilford Park FC are set to change their name to Celtic Nation. No, really.

July 3rd (Tue)

There’s further relief that United will go into the new season with at least one right-back at the club as Hey Frankie! Simek signs on the dotted line for another year.

Former stopper Ben Williams rejects a new contract at Colchester as he looks to a move to get championship football. Eight days later and he showed up at SPL side Hibernian while Preston no-show Richard Wright was strongly linked with Williams’ old job at Colchester.

July 5th (Thu)

Five new trialists will join up for pre-season training in the hope of gaining a contract at the end of it; left-back Alessio Bugno, Aaran Taylor as previously confirmed, centre-half Harrison Blakey, defender Jonathan Meades and midfielder Dale Hopson. Bugno has played with Monza in Italy, Blakey was a youngster with Huddersfield, Meades likewise at Cardiff and Hopson has a dozen or starts with Darlington.

July 6th (Fri)

After surprisingly being transfer listed by Leeds following a full season in their colours, former loan star Adam Clayton moves to Huddersfield for an undisclosed fee as Grayson looks to complete a full suite of ex-loan midfielders; Oliver Norwood having joined just a week earlier.

The Brett Ormerod rumour is put to bed (a bit like Brett really in the afternoon) with his move to Wrexham.

July 7th (Sat)

The latest roll on the “Where’s Zoko Going?” board game sees the piece move five squares to one marked Bramall Lane.

July 9th (Mon)

As if driving several nails into our 84/5 relegation coffin and then beating us 3 times last season wasn’t enough already, Carlisle loses out to Charlton in the race to sign to Jordan Cook after his release from Sunderland.

Scunny are the latest to attempt a Carlisle old boys club with the signature of Mike Grella and Christian Ribeiro on the same day and on 2-year deals. Grella, 25, finished last season on a short-term deal at Bury, having started the campaign at Brentford. No laughing please, his new manager is quoted saying "He believes he's a Championship player and we hope that we can help him get back there, ideally with us."

July 10th (Tue)

The News & Star reports that belts are being seriously tightened at the club with a number of jobs at risk of being axed as a result of the club’s annual review of its business operations and a planned restructure due for around late July.

July 11th (Wed)

Now into the swing of his testimonial year, Murph formally signs the one-year extension offer given at the end of the season.

July 13th (Fri)

KENDAL 0 CARLISLE UTD 3 (FRIENDLY)
Carlisle got off to winning ways in their traditional pre-season opener at Kendal. Bugno, Lindsey and Hopson all played in the first half that saw Gillespie pull off some fine saves to prevent Kendal taking the lead. United eventually settled down and went ahead when Cadamarteri crossed for Miller score with a header 5 yards out. A completely new XI for the second half featured trialists Meades and Blakey in the full-back positions. Berrett made it 2-0 on 48 with an 18-yard shot and Beck added a third on 67 with a simple header after Madden had hit the underside of the Kendal bar with his own header. The game was noted for Chantler impressing in a new midfield role.

July 14th (Sat)

CLEATOR MOOR CELTIC 3 CARLISLE UTD YOUTH 5 (FRIENDLY)
Peel, Clarey, Lynch, Dixon and a trialist were all on the scoresheet for the Youth team in their first pre-season friendly. The game was wrapped up by half-time with a 5-2 lead opened up.

According to the Preston message board, there’s now the roll of a number 2 on the “Where’s Zoko Going?” board game with the piece moving across to Deepdale.

July 16th (Mon)

Harrison Blakey and Ross Lindsay depart the club after not offering anything better than the present squad. Two more arrive in the shape of Mark Kerr and Jim McAlister. 26-year old McAlister was originally a striker in Morton's youth team only to drop further back down the pitch through a left side of midfield role and now into his current full-back spot. He was released at the end of 2009/10 after making almost 300 appearances and scoring 20 goals for them and signed for Hamilton on a two-year contract, where he made 58 starts, 6 substitute appearances and scored one goal before being let go by the Accies this summer.
30-year old Kerr is a defensive midfielder who has played for Falkirk, Dundee United, Aberdeen, Greek side Asteras Tripoli and Dunfermline.

July 17th (Tue)

WORKINGTON TOWN 0 CARLISLE UTD 5 (FRIENDLY)
Two goals from Symington and one from Beck, Welsh and Cadamarteri secured an easy victory for the ‘visitors from the big city’.

With nods to boarder Moorlad for the report:
“Bugno looked to be very pacey and would not be out of place at our level I believe. Edwards was strong and classy, organised all the defensive play and was unhurried at all times, good display. McAlister was pretty good, clever on the ball and made a few interesting runs. Chantler looks well suited to the midfield role he was played in and Thirlwell made a few forward passes, one a defence splitter which was flagged for offside. Cadamarteri looked a proper class act, obviously he wasn't putting himself about too much so wasn't completely committed, but some deft touches and excellent movement showed he'll be useful. I can't wait to see him with Miller they'll scare League 1 defenders ***ess.

Symington might prove a handy addition, he got himself in some good positions, wasn't phased at all for a young lad, and was unlucky not to score a third. Beck needs to work on his strength, and his heading, but could end up a real handful for defenders.”

And -
“…. think Cadamarteri was on a different level to a lot of the players around him. One particular run in the box was something I've not seen a Carlisle forward do in years. I don't think he was pushing himself, and I don't think some players realise where he'll make his runs yet, and where he's likely to lay the ball off to. Some of his touches were excellent, his first touch is really good when compared to the likes of Madden (who ran a lot, got into good positions and was wasteful generally - except the ball in for the first goal), and his movement and pace were very good. His awareness also seemed to be a good step ahead of most of our players (except Welsh). If Miller had been up front with him it would certainly have finished in double figures last night..”

United first half: Collin, Simek, Murphy, Madden, Thirlwell, Kerr, Beck, Edwards, Bugno, McAlister, Hopson.
United second half: Gillespie, Robson, Berrett, Livesey, Welsh, Noble, Chantler, Cadamarteri, Potts, Symington, Meades

Rumours are that Lubo has lost out on a deal at Hibs after too large a wedge for his services.

Derwent Park, the home of Workington Town RLFC, finds out that they have been chosen as the venue for the Tonga v Scotland and Scotland v Italy matches in the 2013 Rugby World Cup. This follows a successful bid from Allerdale Borough Council that involved a substantial sum close to £500,000 being spent on the ground.

July 18th (Wed)

CELTIC NATION 2 CARLISLE UTD YOUTH 2 (FRIENDLY)
An entertaining game against the former Gilford Park outfit saw the Youth team take an early lead from Watson. Former United player Steve Skinner then equalised and a second for them before half-time seemed to be the winner. Young Danny Hodgson’s close range shot on the stroke of full-time meant it was honours even.

July 20th (Fri)

Richard Keogh moves from Coventry City to Derby County for a sizeable wedge and one that United earn a tidy 20% of ……..*probably.
* trust me, these things are more complicated than the Syrian peace process

July 23rd (Mon)

Journalists report that Tom Taiwo has been offered a deal with Bradford City after impressing for them in a friendly but that due to the considerable compensation wanted by Carlisle, the move won’t go ahead.

July 24th (Tue)

DURHAM 0 CARLISLE UTD 3 (FRIENDLY)
Beck’s hat-trick completed a comfortable win for United. Striker Ryan Donaldson impresses in his first appearance.

Gillespie, Simek (Edwards 46), Livesey (Murphy 46), Potts, Bugno, Noble (Berrett 74), Hopson, Kerr, Symington, Donaldson, Beck.

Trialist keeper Aaran Taylor ends his spell at Brunton Park following three weeks of training with the first team squad.

July 27th (Fri)

CARLISLE UTD 1 ST MIRREN 0 (FRIENDLY)
Lee Miller scored the only after the Scottish side fell asleep at the back. Bugno was warmly applauded following his substitution after another assured performance.

United: Collin (Gillespie 46), Potts, Livesey, Edwards (Murphy 61), Bugno (Meades 61), Chantler (Thirlwell 70), Noble, Berrett, Welsh (Symington 70), Miller (Beck 70), Robson (Hopson 70).

Mark Kerr leaves the club to pursue other options north of the border.

July 28th (Sat)

CARLISLE UTD YOUTH 1 WARWICK WANDERERS 3 (FRIENDLY)
Cumberland League Premier Division side Warwick Wanderers brush aside the Youth team thanks to two late goals. Substitute Danny Dixon had just earlier equalised for United on 81 minutes.

July 30th (Mon)

Versatile full-back Jonathan Meades narrowly misses out on a deal after impressing during his weeks at the club. The decision was in many ways, down to the equally fine form of Bugno and the performance of up-and-coming youngster Potts against St .Mirren. Both Bugno and Hopson will stay for an additional week of training.

July 31st (Tue)

QUEEN OF THE SOUTH XI 2 CARLISLE UTD YOUTH 2 (FRIENDLY)
Goals from Connor Hammill and Greg Peel set up a draw against QoS.

Brunton Park Diary - June 2012

June 1st (Fri)

Adam Collin will still be looking over his shoulder at a builders’ yellow/ bright purple goalkeeper shirt filled by the familiar face of Mark Gillespie next season as the young understudy agrees a new 2-year deal.

June 2nd (Sat)

As if five options weren’t enough, the League U-turns the decision made 12 months earlier to reduce the number of splinter-botherers from seven.

June 4th (Mon)

Long-serving stalwart Danny ‘took us to Stoke City’ Livesey, still only 27, agrees to a new 1-year deal.

June 6th (Wed)

As anticipated by many, the mercurial Zoko confirms that he will not be returning to the club next season as he tries to find a club at Championship level. Another forward on the move with an ‘any port in a storm’ philosophy is previous star-of-the-future Andy Cook as he goes from Barrow to Grimsby. Perhaps he likes fish?

June 11th (Mon)

Highly experienced central defender Mike Edwards takes up Carlisle’s offer of a 2-year contract over the 1-year on the table with his present club, Notts. County. Known as The Rock of Gibraltar to the departing fans after 8 years and 300 games there, he comes highly regarded as a tough and dependable defender as well as a good character to have in the dressing room. The internet messsageboard not surprisingly goes into meltdown with comparisons to Kevin Gray.

While Lubo was expected to turn down his contract offer, there’s general disappointment in the news that Tom Taiwo has decided to look for a club nearer his Leeds home citing family reasons.

June 12th (Tue)

Rotherham are strongly linked to a move for JP McGovern, a rumour strong enough to suggest that talks were quite advanced and that the clubs had possibly come close to an arrangement.

June 21st (Thu)

United bring in winger/striker Danny Cadamarteri on a two-year deal. Half of the London Branch football team weren’t even out of nappies when Yorkshire-born Cadamarteri, now 32, made his debut for the Toffees in a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea during the 1996/97 campaign. After stints with Bradford City, Leeds United, Sheffield United, Leicester City and Dundee United, he was released by Huddersfield Town after his second spell with the Terriers.

On the same day, former shirt filler Kevan Hurst goes on a free from Walsall to Southend on a 2-year deal.

June 28th (Thu)

Less than positive news comes on the club’s progress with Parnaby and Cook with both talking to Championship clubs. The words “resort”, “Carlisle” and “last” spring to mind.

Not-quite-up-to-scratch Tom Cruise goes on a free from Arsenal to Torquay United while David Raven hops over the wall and joins Inverness. That’ll be a change of scenery.

Brunton Park Diary - May 2012

May 1st (Tue)

Former loan left-back Ribeiro is released by Bristol City.

May 2nd (Wed)

CARLISLE UTD 2 HARRABY CATHOLIC CLUB 1
A hardly vintage display against the local side, the phrase ‘done just enough’ spring to mind. Goals from Potts and Beck, the winner being in the last minute of normal time, separated the sides.

United: Gillespie, Gwinnutt (Brough 46), Minor (Berwick 65), Potts, Todd, O'Halloran, Lynch, Thirlwell, Beck, Madden, Symington.

Adam Clayton is surprisingly transfer listed by Nasty Leeds.

May 3rd (Thu)

Young winger Ben Mckenna is told he can leave the club after an injury-plagued season. Following him out of the exit door is defender Steven Swinglehurst despite the profit potential of replica shirt sales.

May 5th (Sat)

OLDHAM ATH. 2 CARLISLE UTD 1
A game with no bearing on the play-offs after wins for both Stevenage and Notts. County, the latter comfortably seeing off John Ward’s Colchester ‘let’s all lie down like lambs and get slaughtered’ United. Tom Taiwo came off the bench for an ineffective Madden to score a fine header to bring the game all square however parity lasted just the four minutes as more slack, set-piece defending allowed Oldham to score the winner.

*Player Ratings: Collin 5, Simek 6, Livesey 7 (=star man), Robson 5.5, Michalik 4.5, Noble 7 (=star man), McGovern 6.5, Welsh 3.5, Berrett 6, Zoko 6.5, Madden 3. Subs: Taiwo 7 (=star man).

May 18th (Fri)

Zoko tweets what appears to be a message that’s turned down the contract offer at Carlisle in favour of the opportunity for more lucre elsewhere. The generally hyperbolic (or certainly “bolic”) Football Transfer Rumours website has David McGoldrick moving to Brunton Park from Forest with Zoko moving the other way.

May 19th (Sat)

Begging phone call alert; Jordan Cook is released by Sunderland.

May 22nd (Tue)
