Brunton Park Diary - July 2011

July 6th (Wed)

Managing Director John Nixon urges Watford to come clean about any sell-on or performance-related clauses in Danny Graham’s recent transfer to Swansea. The final money is likely to trickle in over a number of years and just to emphasise this, it’s also revealed that Carlisle received £6,000 this week as part of Rochdale’s purchase of Glenn Murray way back in early 2007.

Former winger Joe Anyinsah secures a free transfer move to Bristol Rovers following his release from Charlton.
The 26-year-old scored five goals in 24 appearances for the Valiants last season.

July 7th (Thu)

After a delay in the formal announcement that may have been down to his search for a 2-year contract from either the club or elsewhere, it’s finally confirmed that Peter Murphy and his baby swinging celebrations will be gracing Brunton Park and assorted other League One grounds for another 12 months at the club having triggered the required appearance threshold back in February.

Ben Mckenna has a sick note from his mum saying that “Ben has a nasty little ankle ligament problem and is not allowed to play football with his friends for the next four weeks”.

July 8th (Fri)

The St. Lucian national football team coached by Greg for two weeks during his recent holiday, go down 4-2 away to Aruba in their two-leg Preliminary round qualifier. The second leg is played on July 12th. When the team coach criticises his players for “being on the beach”, they really can say it with absolute sincerity.

The Lakeland Radio Stadium in Kendal hosts the opening friendly of the 2011/2 campaign as Carlisle secure a 5-1 victory through Berrett 14, Curran 36, Green 48, Welsh 82 and Zoko 88. In typical Cumbrian conditions for July (i.e. drenching rain), McGovern had the task of operating at the top of the diamond formation behind the front two in the first half. The returning Stuart Green capped a strong 2nd half midfield performance with a goal and fellow Danish trialist Lasse Mikkelsen also did his chances no harm.

United first half: Collin, Simek, Livesey, O'Halloran, Swinglehurst, Thirlwell, Taiwo, Berrett, McGovern, Curran, Loy.
United second half: Gillespie, McGlen, Michalik, Murphy, Robson, Mikkelsen (Todd 77), Green, Welsh, Zoko, Madden, Brodersen.

July 12th (Tue)

In an interview with the News & Star, Ben ‘ it’s just a scratch ’ Marshall says that he hasn’t closed the door on a return to Carlisle United after making good progress with the broken fibia, dislocated ankle and torn ligaments suffered at Wembley. Marshall is in talks with Stoke boss Tony Pulis over whether he will go out on loan again next season or stay in the Potteries and fight for a place. If the former, Stoke are likely to favour a loan to a Championship club in order to step up his development. Fearing most splinter-inducing work due to his inevitable recovery from injury, Marshall appears to be favouring another spell at Carlisle.

St. Lucia reciprocates the 4-2 defeat previously inflicted by Aruba and so at 6-6, the match enters the high drama of penalties. St. Lucia duly wins to progress to the qualifying group stages of World Cup 2014 being held in Brazil.

July 15th (Fri)

Having signed a new one-year deal with Sunderland just two days earlier, midfielder Liam Noble joins United on a second loan spell. The deal is up to and inclusive of the Sheffield United home league game on 2 January 2012 and could be extended until the end of the season. Managing director John Nixon is quoted: "Sunderland are very mindful that they had injury problems in the second part of last season so we will be in a position where we will discuss the way forward in terms of extending the loan period once we get closer to the end of this year.”

July 16th (Sat)

After relentless rain before and during the match, the friendly at Conference side Gateshead is called off after 58 minutes with the Blues already 2-0 down after two defensive mistakes in the farcical conditions.

July 17th (Sun)

Marshall grabs the headlines for Stoke City in a 6-1 win over Newport YMCA including their first 2 goals. Some old timer called Delap hit the 6th after coming on for the last half hour.

Jazzy Jeff Smith is given a trial at Rotherham and will be going with them on their pre-season tour to Portugal (how do they afford that?).

July 19th (Tue)

MORECAMBE 2 CARLISLE UTD 1 – FRIENDLY
Morecambe made the most of the substitution roulette process by stealing a late 2-1 win. Carlisle had been the dominant force in the first half and were rewarded by Loy’s run and hammered strike from 25 yards on 22. The equaliser came from a corner on 76 and then Swinglehurst’s unhappy pre-season programme continued with him committing his second penalty-giving foul in the space of a few days. The main plus point was the Livesey and Murphy partnership through the first 77 minutes of the game.

Annan Athletic Reserves are too strong for Carlisle’s Youth team in a 4-2 reverse. Mark Beck made it 2-1 on 33 after Annan stormed to a 2-0 lead in the first 11 minutes. Further goals on 49 and 73 widened the lead before makeshift forward Josh Calvert made the score a little more respectable on 79 with a 25-yard drive.

July 20th (Wed)

Trialists Green and Mikkelsen are released following the game.

July 22nd (Fri)

Nahki Wells impresses Bradford City on trial and earns a 1-year deal.

July 23rd (Sat)

CARLISLE UTD 1 DONCASTER ROVERS 0 – FRIENDLY
This was a game that represented a very comfortable afternoon’s work for Carlisle against a poor Donny side in Sean McDaid’s testimonial. New boys Welsh, McGovern and O'Halloran were all very impressive. McGovern used the ball very well in a free role while Welsh worked hard and added a direct edge to our forward play. O'Halloran was solid, looked good in the air and composed with the ball at his feet. Zoko and Robson were the pick of last season’s regulars.

United: Collin, Simek, Michalik, O'Halloran (Murphy 62), Robson, McGovern, Thirlwell (Berrett 62), Taiwo, Welsh, Curran, Zoko (Loy 62).

PENRITH XI 2 CARLISLE UTD XI 3
A Madden hat-trick helps Carlisle pick up their second victory of the day with a team mostly made up of youth and fringe players.

July 25th (Mon)

From the Juventus team to playing in a Southend XI as a trial striker at Needham Market via Carlisle United. Take a bow J-L-Pericard.

July 26th (Tue)

CARLISLE UTD 2 MIDDLESBOROUGH 0 – FRIENDLY
Tuned up like Lewis Hamilton’s F1 McLaren, the pre-season hype engine is revved to the max with a fine display against a supposedly strong Boro side. Berrett pulled the strings in an excellent display that included both a superb goal and a penalty miss, Zoko ran the Smoggie defenders ragged at times while Loy looked sharp and hungry up front.

United: Collin, Simek (McGlen 46), Livesey, Murphy, Robson (Swinglehurst 80), Berrett, Taiwo, Noble, McGovern (Welsh 76), Loy (Madden 61), Zoko.

July 27th (Wed)

WORKINGTON TOWN 2 CARLISLE UTD XI 0 – FRIENDLY
A soft penalty and a fine finish in the last 20 minutes settle a poor game in favour of the Reds. The unfortunate Madden fractures his fifth metatarsal early on in the game, an injury likely to keep him out for 12 weeks. Curran also suffers a dead leg that keeps him out of the Bradford game at the weekend.

United: Gillespie, Parker, Thirlwell, Welsh, Curran, O'Halloran, Michalik, Madden, Swinglehurst, Symington, Lynch, Potts, Beck, Minor, McGlen.

July 28th (Thu)

Having been released by Carlisle following his trial, Stuart Green signs a 2-year deal with Workington Town.

July 30th (Sat)

BRADFORD CITY 1 CARLISLE UTD 3 – FRIENDLY
Despite a shaky start where City had by far the better of the first half and scored on their first attack following a slip from O'Halloran while dealing with a long ball, Carlisle came powering back thanks to Taiwo’s diving header on 45, another 30-yard special from Berrett on 54 and a near repeat from 25 yards on 78. Nahki Wells came on for the final ten minutes for Bradford.

United: Collin, Simek, Livesey (Michalik 46), O'Halloran (Murphy 46 (Swinglehurst 69 (Kavanagh 83))), Robson, Thirlwell, Taiwo (Noble 56), Berrett, McGovern, Zoko, Welsh (Loy 46).

BLACKBURN YOUTH 2 CARLISLE UTD YOUTH 0 – FRIENDLY
Two first half goals are enough for the Black Pudding eaters.

Brunton Park Diary - June 2011

June 1st (Wed)

Location, Location, Location. 27-year old left winger Andy Welsh joins from Yeovil having previously played with Stockport and Sunderland amongst others. Having spent three years at Huish Park making 120 appearances in total and topping their most assists chart each season, he decided to turn down the offer of a new contract in favour of Carlisle. With family in Blackpool and Glasgow, geography came to our aid on this occasion.

June 2nd (Thu)

According to reports from the BBC site, former loanee Darryl Duffy is being courted by one or both of St Johnstone and Carlisle following the 27-year-olds release from Bristol Rovers. Duffy joined Hibernian last summer on loan from the Pirates but broke a bone in his foot before making a first-team appearance for the Edinburgh club. After recovering, he only made four starts for Hibs last season before returning to his parent club.

June 3rd (Fri)

The jungle drums start vibrating once more with the news that we’re meant to be amongst a clutch of League One clubs interested in winger Jeff Hughes, another player to escape from Bristol Rovers at the end of last season. Hughes netted 11 goals for the Pirates last term including the first hat-trick of his career in their 3-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge – and scored 28 times in 129 league outings after joining the club from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2008.
He started his career at Lincoln City before joining the Eagles, but made only a handful of appearances for the south London club and found himself out of favour when Neil Warnock succeeded Peter Taylor as manager shortly after his arrival.

June 5th (Sun)

Former loan star Tim Krul represents Holland in goal for their friendly against Brazil.

June 6th (Mon)

Swansea City up their initial £3m (yes, £3m!) offer for Danny Graham with an improved bid of £3.5m.

June 12th (Sun)

The annual “Adam LeFondre to sign for Carlisle” rumour has the dust blown off its jacket and given a new airing.

June 16th (Thu)

It’s a rather uninspiring draw for Abbott and co. as Carlisle are given an away trip to Boundary Park, Oldham in the first round of the Carling Cup. The ties are to be played w/c August 8th.

Carlisle and Sheffield United are widely reported to be two clubs in the chase for Jon-Paul McGovern from relegated Swindon Town. JPM who had an outstanding 09/10 season and has spent four years (probably feels like 20) at Town, had a bid of £750k supposedly turned down from Brighton not too long ago. He plays on the far right and would therefore be seen as both a replacement for Hurst and a Plan B when the diamond doesn’t work.

Exeter sign former Blue and alleged alcopop enthusiast Lenny Pidgeley from Bradford City after making 22 appearances for the Bantams last season.

June 18th (Sat)

The Liam Noble situation is updated with GA advising that the club will stay out of the way until Noble’s contract situation with Sunderland is resolved. He then intends to talk to Steve Bruce to see what his plans are.

June 19th (Sun)

Keeper Adam Collin signs a 2-year contract with the club until summer 2013.

Oh dear…. page 37 of the day's ‘News of The World’ quotes "A Football star has been quizzed by cops on suspicion of arson. Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine, 20, was arrested when a car blaze broke out near his parents' house on May 19.
Madine was home for the close season. Police are still investigating the cause of the fire".

June 20th (Mon)

As rumoured on Thursday, Scottish-born Jon-Paul McGovern joins Carlisle on a 2-year deal until summer 2013 that sees him able to commute from his home over the border.

Non-contract:
Alex Berham - midfielder/forward
Josh Calvert - midfielder

School boys:
Kyle Dempsey

June 21st (Tue)

The possibility of a pre-season friendly between Carlisle and Celtic is scuppered due to potential policing and safety issues. Hoops boss Neil Lennon had instigated the offer around a date of July 20th. There were however, concerns about Rangers supporters passing through on their way back from a Blackpool game on the 19th.

The club decide to end their one-year experiment on the smaller, £1 programme by returning to the normal format for 2011/2. News on the future of the United Scene magazine wasn’t included with the announcement.

June 22nd (Wed)

Keiren Westwood’s rumoured move on a Bosman free transfer to Sunderland is confirmed. His main competition for a first-team place will be from Craig “more surgeries than a season of ER” Gordon.

June 23rd (Thu)

Danny Livesey is the latest to become a proud dad with the birth of his twins Ty Daniel and Isabelle Marie.

June 24th (Fri)

Left-back Stephen O'Halloran signs a pre-contract agreement with the Blues for one year with the option of another. Still only 23, O’Halloran was released by Coventry at the end of the season having previously been on the books of Aston Vila. His years at both clubs were plagued by injury however that hasn’t stopped Abbott moving in for the player, who had been tracked for some years including discussions when he was still at Villa. He also represented Eire twice in 2007 at full international level having worked up various age groups between U15 and U21.

Newly reprieved Southport complete the signing of former defender Simon Grand on a free transfer from Fleetwood. The 27-year-old signed for Fleetwood last summer but made just four appearances before loan spells at Mansfield and Aldershot.

June 28th (Tue)

After his release at the end of the season, Kevan Hurst joins up with Walsall.

June 29th (Wed)

Greg confirms that young Danish striker Michael Broderson will be joining the squad shortly on trial. One familiar face training with the squad to keep fit is local lad Stuart Green following his release from Wycombe Wanderers. It’s also confirmed that the Shefki Kuqi rumour was true and that he has been approached about a move to Brunton Park. The talks have been described as “very positive” and they hope to hear back shortly.
