Brunton Park Diary - August 2010

August 1st

CARLISLE UTD 1 HIBS 0 - FRIENDLY
Zoko and Simek again strongly impress with their performance against a side already into their competitive season. The winner comes 8 minutes from time when Harte steals ahead of his marker to head in a Berrett cross.

Collin, Simek, Chester, Harte, McDaid (Murphy 60), Thirlwell (Berrett 46), Taiwo, Zoko (Bridge-Wilkinson 67), Hurst (Curran 46), Robson, Madine (Price 60). Subs: Gillespie, Caig, Bowman, Cook, Kane, Kavanagh.

The ‘mystery man’ in the line up is revealed as Man Utd’s young centre-half James Chester (21). He joined up with the Cumbrians view to a loan deal having previously had a short spell with both Peterborough and Plymouth. His only senior action with MUFC was in the Carling Cup along with the kit man, a raffle-winning member of the supporters’ club and two of the Old Trafford tea ladies.

The four recent trialists; Long, Lopez, Cases and Hutton, are all informed that their futures lie away from Brunton Park. That’s unless we draw Stockport or Southend in one of the early rounds of the FA Cup …. they’ll just about take anyone at the moment.

August 3rd

James Chester’s loan deal is confirmed and he will initially stay to January 3rd with the potential for longer depending on all parties concerned.

August 5th

Another former left-back is on the move as Michael Liddle goes to Leyton Orient on loan from Sunderland.

Paul Murray will make his 23rd debut under a team either managed or coached by Mick Wadsworth as he links up with him at Hartlepool following his release from Shrewsbury.

Trialist M’Voto decides on a season long loan to Oldham.

It’s announced that Carlisle Utd will benefit to the tune of £335,000 under a new funding deal struck between the Premier League and the Football League. The new system of “solidarity payments”, which distributes some of the income generated by the top flight to clubs in the three Football League divisions, sees every Championship club receive £2.2 million, with League One sides getting £335,000 and League Two outfits benefiting by £225,000.

August 6th

Andy Cook rejoins Barrow on a month’s loan having scored 3 goals in 4 games before injury last season with the Bluebirds.
After turning down a permanent move to Carlisle, Adam Clayton goes on loan to L**ds United.

August 7th (Sat). IT’S THE NEW SEASON!!

CARLISLE UTD 2 BRENTFORD 0
A welcome reversal of fortunes from last season as just under 6,000 watch an accomplished performance from Abbott’s new look side featuring no less than six debuts. The woodwork saves Brentford twice in the first six minutes with Chester’s header looping against the bar followed by Curran poked shot hitting the post from 6 yards out. The pressure eventually tells when McDaid’s driven diagonal ball from the left wing evades everyone apart from the waiting Madine, who controls well before slotting home. A few half-hearted shouts for handball are rightly waved away by the referee.
Despite a potentially tricky combination of Nicky Forster and Gary Alexander up front, the Blues’ new defence dealt ably with the threat with Simek and Chester especially impressive. The game was sewn up when Curran was tripped in the box on the stroke of half-time and Harte confidently scored the spot kick.

Player Ratings: Collin 8, Simek 9, Chester 8.25, Harte 8, McDaid 7, Thirlwell 8.5, Berrett 8, Taiwo 8.5, Zoko 8 (Bridge-Wilkinson 75), Curran 9, Madine 8. Subs: Caig, Murphy, Hurst, Price, Robson, Kane.

Offiong is given half a game for Darlington in their friendly against Gretna following his first week back in full training. According to an attendee on the Darlington board “Offiong was poor to say the least, always wanted the ball but when he got it he rarely did anything effective.”

No it wasn’t a one-point tennis match, yes, 15 goals. Try that one for size BBC teleprinter.

Danny Livesey is given the news that he won’t require an operation on his injury and that he should be back in full training in around 10 weeks time.

August 10th (Tue)

CARLISLE UTD 0 HUDDERSFIELD 1 – CARLING CUP 1st ROUND
In an enjoyably competitive game in which both teams lined up unchanged from the league game and Joe Garner and James Berrett lined up against their former clubs, the Terriers sneak an 89th winner to set up an away tie at Everton in the second round. Madine was again lively up front and only denied by the keeper from adding to his account. It took a cruel slip by Chester to allow Novak to steal in and set up an easy finish from Rhodes.

Player Ratings: Collin 6.8, Simek 8.6, Chester 8.2, Harte 8, McDaid 6.4, Thirlwell 6.8 (MBW 92), Berrett 7, Taiwo 7.2, Zoko 6.2 (Robson 82), Curran 6.8, Madine 7.4. Subs: Caig, Murphy, Hurst, Price, Kane.

August 13th (Fri)

Offiong completes a 1-month loan to Darlington in order to get some valuable pitch time.

PRESTON YOUTH 1 CARLISLE YOUTH 0
Preston show their first team how to win a game of football with 3 points against the Blues.

PLYMOUTH A. 1 CARLISLE UTD 1

What would have been an excellent point before kick-off feels like two lost with Plymouth equalising in the 4th minute of injury time. Harte had scored what had looked until then the winner on 68 with a header following MBW’s driven ball.

Player Ratings: Collin 7, Simeck 7, Chester 7, Harte 8.5, McDaid 6, Thirlwell 5, Taiwo 9, Berrett 7, Zoko 5, Madine 5, Curran 6, (Bridge Wilkinson 5). Subs: Caig, Murphy, Hurst, Bowman, Kane.

August 21st (Sat)

CARLISLE UTD 4 MK DONS 1
After a fairly even first half, the Cumbrians went top of the table after producing a rampant second-half display led by Zoko and Madine. The two in combination with the spirited Curran saw the team running rings around the hapless Dons.

* Player Ratings: Collin 6.4, Simek 7, Chester 7.25, Harte 7.13, McDaid 6.75, Thirlwell 7.88, Taiwo 7.5, Berrett 7.13, Zoko 9 (star man), Madine 8.5, Curran 7.

August 27th (Fri)

COLCHESTER UTD 1 CARLISLE UTD 1
The Campaign for the Liberation of Underused New Grounds in England or ‘CLUNGE’ gains several new members amongst the London Branch after once more visiting the soulless home of Colchester Utd pressed against the edge of the A12 bypass.
In almost a repeat performance from Saturday, the team took a while to go through the gears and fell behind after falling asleep at a short corner. Two expected old boys were missing from the game (Williams and Hackney) however a watching Danny Graham and Tom Aldred must have been impressed with the second half from their seats in the away end. The only surprise was that it took so long for the equaliser to come.

Player Ratings (MK): Collin 6, Simek 7, Chester 6, Harte 6, McDaid 6, Thirlwell 9 (star man), Taiwo 6, Berrett 6, Zoko 7, Madine 7, Curran 7.

August 30th (Mon)

You wait ages for news on your former forwards and then all of a sudden it comes at once. Joe Anyinsah joins Charlton ‘not quite a small suburb of Bristol but who cares’ Athletic following a two week trial and Daryl Duffy signs a one-year deal with SPL side Hibs.

August 31st (Tue)

Two in and one out on transfer deadline day. Reading ask to speak to Ian Harte on Monday and 24 hours later his offski to the Madjeski. Just a little over a week earlier - and it’s still on the official CUFC site – there had been an interview with Harte talking about his contract extension and the exciting times ahead under “Defender on signing for United”. It turns out he hadn’t however as still under contract, a reasonably sized transfer fee is believed to have been prised away from Reading for the 33-year old’s services.

Replacing Harte at the centre of the defence will be human brick outhouse Lubomir Michalik on loan from Leeds until early January. The Slovakian international has gradually fallen out of favour with the dirty cheats Whites after joining the then cash-strapped Yorkshire club for 500 big ones in January 2008.

Completing the business for the day, Ben Marshall wings in once again from Stoke City with a loan deal to 3/1/11 as he looks to add to his 20 appearances and 3 goals with the Blues last season.

One player not coming back is Adam Clayton whose loan move to Leeds is firmed up as a permanent deal.
