CUSCLB Match Report

 Gillingham 5 - 3 Carlisle United

It seems a sad comment on Gillingham’s Council that their own team can’t find a pitch to play on within the town and they have to go as far away as Sittingbourne to find one.

Still it was a good one despite a week’s wet weather.  The ground was obviously so soft they had not been able to mow one side of the pitch which resulted in ankle length rough on one side and a putting green on the other. It made life interesting.

The London Branch team, with a strong wind behind them, came out of the blocks fast and dominated the early stages.  They scored a quick goal and a penalty soon after seemed to suggest it was going to be very one sided.  This proved incorrect.

The Branch team missed a number of chances to increase their lead and then the Gillingham team brought on their substitutes who had more pace.

The older members of the Branch team had started to flag after about 25 minutes.  The home team pegged back a couple of goals just before half time.

The second half was a disaster as the Branch never got to grips with the strong wind or the opposition and leaked three more goals.

A late flourish at the end created a number of chances but only one was put away.

A strange game given that the teams were evenly matched.

Although the Branch scored three goals they let in five without reply in the middle of the game.

One of the positives to come out of the game were the performances of the younger players, three of them are Under 15 but they showed they had too much skill for their older and larger opponents.

After the game they persuaded another Brunton Blue that he should be playing too. Given he has been at Fulham’s academy he will add another extremely fit and skilful player to the squad.

Millwall are next!
